Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri will continue its support and participation of April Showers, a community-wide personal care item drive for families in need. People who use public assistance to buy food cannot buy personal care items with that assistance.

Girl Scouts will distribute white, recycled plastic bags door-to-door throughout the Council’s jurisdiction, April 4, 5 and 6. Residents have until April 12 to fill their bags with the listed items. Residents who do not receive a bag on their doors can visit a Showering the Community Event at local Walmarts on April 5. Besides Walmart, Emerson, Dierbergs and Schnucks all partner with Girl Scouts for April Showers.

During Showering the Community, Girl Scout troops stand in front of Walmart stores, some wearing raincoats and galoshes or holding umbrellas as they hand raindrop-shaped lists of needed items to people. Girls encourage customers to buy some of these items as they complete their own shopping. Participating shoppers then hand the items to the girls at the stores’ exits.

Those in the St. Louis metropolitan area who are unable to participate in Showering the Community or who forget to donate during the event may drop off items at any Missouri Dierbergs market from April 12 to May 3 or at any Missouri Schnucks store between April 2 and April 15.

“Our April Showers program accomplishes two goals. First, it provides personal care items to those in need,” said Bonnie Barczykowski, CEO of Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri. “Second, it teaches our Girl Scouts the value of community service and the importance of giving back to their communities.”

The April Showers program provides an opportunity for girls in grades K-12 to learn to lead, take responsibility, make good decisions and care about others. In 2013, more than 15,000 Girl Scouts in more than 2,000 troops and 12,000 adult volunteers donated more than 70,000 hours and collected more than 1.1 million items.

Continue to help Girl Scouts this year by filling your April Showers bags with items like toothpaste, soap, toilet paper, deodorant and shampoo. Missouri food banks continue to report a 30 percent increase in demand. To view drop-off locations, a list of needed personal care items or for more information, visit

Since its launch in 1998, Girl Scouts have collected more than 12 million donated items through April Showers. April Showers continues to be a cornerstone for local shelters and families in need of donated items. Girl Scouts attributes this major accomplishment to the generosity of residents within its community.
